Common AV Installation Mistakes (And How to Avoid Them)

Avoid these frequent and costly errors when planning, purchasing, and installing commercial audio visual systems.

Investing in a commercial AV installation is a major capital expense. Unfortunately, many organizations make critical errors during the planning and installation phases that result in poor performance, user frustration, and wasted money.

Here are the most common AV installation mistakes and how an experienced audio video integration company can help you avoid them.

    1. Ignoring Room Acoustics

The Mistake: Buying top-of-the-line commercial audio systems and installing them in a room made entirely of glass, concrete, and drywall, then wondering why you can't understand a word the presenter is saying.

The Solution: AV design must include acoustic analysis. Treating the room with acoustic absorption panels to reduce reverberation (echo) is often more important than the brand of speakers you buy.

    2. Designing for the Expert, Not the User

The Mistake: Building a highly complex system with dozens of routing options that requires a degree in audio engineering to turn on. If the system is too complicated, the staff will simply stop using it.

The Solution: User interface (UI) design is critical. The control system (touch panels) should be programmed with simple, scenario-based buttons (e.g., "Presentation Mode," "Video Conference Mode") that automate the complex routing behind the scenes.

    3. Underestimating Network Requirements

The Mistake: Assuming the building's existing IT network can handle uncompressed 4K video over IP (SDVoE) and dozens of channels of Dante audio without any configuration. This leads to dropped video frames, audio latency, and crashing networks.

The Solution: AV and IT are no longer separate disciplines. Your AV integrator must work with your IT department early in the process to provision dedicated VLANs, ensure switches have adequate PoE+ power, and configure QoS (Quality of Service) to prioritize AV traffic.

    4. Value-Engineering the Wrong Things

The Mistake: Cutting the budget by buying cheap, unshielded cables, consumer-grade TVs instead of commercial displays, or removing the DSP (Digital Signal Processor).

The Solution: Consumer TVs are not built to run 16 hours a day and lack the control protocols needed for automation. Cheap cables will cause intermittent dropouts that are incredibly expensive to troubleshoot later. A good integrator will tell you where you can safely save money and where you absolutely must not compromise.

    5. Bringing the AV Integrator in Too Late

The Mistake: Waiting until the walls are painted and the ceiling is finished to call the AV company. This results in surface-mounted conduit running down beautiful walls and compromises on speaker placement because structural steel wasn't planned for rigging.

The Solution: Bring your AV consultant into the architectural design phase. They will specify the necessary conduit, power requirements, and structural backing before the first stud is placed.
