Choosing the Right Digital Scoreboard
Discover the key factors to consider when selecting an LED scoreboard for your school, gymnasium, or sports facility.
The scoreboard is the focal point of any sporting event. It dictates the pace of the game, informs the crowd, and provides a platform for sponsorship and school pride. Moving from traditional fixed-digit scoreboards to full digital LED scoreboards is a game-changer for modern facilities.
Here is what you need to know when selecting the right digital scoreboard for your venue.
1. Indoor vs. Outdoor
The environment dictates the hardware. Outdoor scoreboards must be weatherproof (IP65 rated or higher) to withstand rain, snow, and extreme temperatures. They also require incredibly high brightness (often 6,000 to 10,000 nits) to be visible in direct sunlight.
Indoor scoreboards, used in gymnasiums or arenas, do not need weatherproofing and require less brightness (typically 800 to 1,500 nits). Using an outdoor board indoors would be blindingly bright, and using an indoor board outdoors would be invisible in the sun.
2. Pixel Pitch and Viewing Distance
"Pixel pitch" is the distance (in millimeters) between the center of one LED pixel and the center of the next. A smaller pixel pitch means a higher resolution and a sharper image, but it also increases the cost.
The right pixel pitch depends entirely on viewing distance. For a massive stadium where the closest fan is 100 feet away, a 10mm or 16mm pixel pitch is perfectly fine. For an indoor high school gymnasium where fans are sitting 15 feet away, a much tighter pixel pitch (like 2.5mm or 3.9mm) is required so the image doesn't look pixelated.
3. Software and Control Systems
A digital scoreboard is only as good as the software running it. Traditional scoreboards had a single, dedicated controller. Full LED video scoreboards require specialized software capable of handling multiple zones simultaneously.
You need software that can display the live score and clock, run sponsor advertisements, show player stats, and trigger high-energy animations for touchdowns or 3-pointers—all from an intuitive interface that student volunteers or staff can easily operate.
4. Revenue Generation (Sponsorships)
One of the biggest advantages of a full LED digital scoreboard is its ability to generate revenue. Traditional scoreboards rely on static, printed sponsor panels that are difficult to change.
With a digital board, you can sell dynamic advertising inventory. You can run pre-game commercials, sponsor specific game moments (e.g., "The First National Bank Red Zone"), and rotate dozens of sponsors throughout the game. Many schools find that a digital scoreboard pays for itself within a few years through increased ad revenue.
5. Structural and Electrical Requirements
Digital scoreboards are heavy and draw significant power. Before purchasing, a professional AV installation team must evaluate your facility. They will determine if the existing wall or I-beams can support the weight, and if your electrical panel has the capacity to handle the power draw at maximum brightness.
